Tecno Phantom X – A venture bound to fail

Tecno Camon X techarea24

Tecno is operated by Chinese Brand Transsion and has mainly focused on African and Asian markets. A brand is known for its dominance in the low-end market. Their phones are normally well priced and they offer little extra compared to their competitors in a bit of less price. This time, Tecno Pakistan, in a surprising move has released Tecno Phantom X in Pakistan, and quite discreetly so.

There wasn’t much hype created. A little to no social media campaign was run. There was no proper ceremony or anything whatsoever.

Instead, Tecno collaborated with their dependent Youtuber to quietly launch it through his website. We at TechArea24 were quite surprised with the move. So here is our analysis as to why Tecno Phantom X is bound to fail in Pakistan at a hefty price tag of 69,999 PKR. But as a marketing move, Tecno is offering a free gimbal. The offer will last till 20th August 2021.

Tecno Phantom X Specs

The specs sheet is not so good but not bad also. It’s sort of OK. But not alright once we see the price tag and compare it with other options available in that price range.

Tecno Phantom X – Is it a Flagship Phone?

Tecno Phantom X has edge-to-edge display

Well by no means it is a flagship phone. It uses the same MediaTek Helio G95 which was available in Tecno Camon 17 Pro. And do remember that Tecno Camon 17 Pro is available for half the price. It is being sold at around 32,000 PKR in Pakistan. And to know the true worth, we compared Camon 17 Pro vs POCO M3 Pro to know who is the winner.

Mediatek Helio G95 is not a very bad processor. It is fine once it comes to playing high-end best mobile phone games. But it is made on 12nm architecture. And that means that it is bound to get hot and then lag and consequently as a result will drain your battery more.

But if you are someone who is not willing to pay a premium price and is happy to use a smartphone for videos or some decent cameras then, do check our take on best smartphones under the 20K category. You might save some money.

The Tripple Camera – Is it good?

Tecno Phantom X triple camera

That doesn’t mean that it inherits everything from there. There are definite upgrades. A primary camera that is good at 50MP but not extraordinary. And especially at night photography.

Moreover, a telephoto lens that is capable of 2 x Zoom levels and an 8MP Ultra-wide camera.

An OK dual selfie camera (48 MP selfie camera+ 8MP wide camera) that eats up lots of space on the front screen. Moreover, the front dual cameras placements alongside spacing make video watching or playing the games’ experience miserable.

The camera gimmick does not make it the best camera smartphone in its category. Although the main 50Mp camera is the same as was used in Vivo X60 Pro Plus but the stabilization system used by Vivo is far superior.

Display

But that does not mean that all the bad are there. Phantom X by Tecno has got a good AMOLED display with an under-screen fingerprint scanner. Which performs well. Screen brightness is good for outdoor use. Moreover, an edge-to-edge display does give this phone a premium look. Moreover, the phone offers a 90Hz refresh rate which is good but also available in 30,000 PKR category phones so we will not consider it extraordinary.

The front screen is protected by Corning Gorilla 5. The backside of the Phone is glass protected but Tecno has not specified the protection level.

Why Phantom X is a failure

The answer is simple. People are not yet ready to pay a premium price for not so premium company. Tecno is the market leader once it comes to lower-end phones. Before the Phantom X, Tecno’s most high-end phone in Pakistan was Camon 17 Pro. And now Tecno has jumped into high-end waters without much preparation.

The official Facebook page of Tecno Pakistan is filled up with angry comments from consumers bragging about the high price.

A phone that is not amongst the best gaming smartphones once compared to same category phones. Moreover not amongst the best camera smartphones in that price range.

And guess what, not at all the best performance smartphone either. Consumers are much educated now and they tend to read all about smartphones before making a purchase decision.

Tecno did collaborate with YouTubers but sadly in our opinion, the paid partnerships can not hide the truth. People are too smart now.

So Why Did Tecno launched Phantom X in Pakistan

The first thing we need to understand is that Tecno did know that this will happen. Tecno must have done their research before releasing Phantom X in Pakistan. The phone was earlier released in Nigeria and then in some other countries. It met the same fate as the phone was not very well received.

Despite being knowing that it’s a failed stint, yet it is launched. We can tell you that marketing people in Teno Pakistan were knowing as to what will happen. That’s why the phone was launched very discreetly without much hype.

TechArea24 team thinks that Tecno is making up the minds of its consumers that the company is about to enter into a high-end war of smartphones. And in near future, we might see a phone by Tecno that is well priced and may take on the mid to high-end smartphones with a surprise. If this phone was priced in the 50K category, it might have seen some success.

So let’s just wait and see as to how Tecno deals with the failure of Phantom X and yet capitalize on the next phone.
