Design and Feel:

We all have an irrational desire that our smartphones should look classy with a smooth texture. Redmi 9 provides a very pleasant display. Yet being

one of the most affordable smartphones around but certainly it doesn’t look cheap. It comes with dimensions of 163.3*77*9.1mm with a very lightweight of  198 grams.

The frame is made up of plastic and front is composed of Gorilla Glass 3. It’s a dual SIM smartphone with a dual stand-by of Nano-SIM.

The Redmi 9 is based on Xiaomi’s  Aura Edge design which brings a textured back and prevents smudges.

Display:

The smartphone features an IPS LCD with 400 nits(typ) with a size of 6.35 inches and screen to body ratio is approximately 83.2%. The device has space at the top in the shape of water drop for the selfie camera. The resolution of the screen is 1080*2340 pixels making for  395ppi density.

Redmi 9 is among the few ones to provide a 1080p screen in such a low budget. Corning Gorilla Glass provides protection.

Xiaomi Redmi 9 runs on MIUI 14 which is based on Android 10 OS.

The chipset is made up of Mediatek Halio G80( 12nm).

Software and performance :

Redmi 9 runs on MIUI based on the latest Android 10. The screen can be unlocked via fingerprint scanner. Smartphone supports dark mode and switches system colours from white to black.  There is a weather widget in the upper right corner beside a large clock widget. The task switcher shows all of your recent apps in two columns.

MIUI offers a security App, proprietary Gallery, music and video player. FM Radio App is also available and the device has got an integrated radio antenna. MIUI11  has proprietary document viewing app which contains all popular formats and makes easier viewing. Redmi 9 is also having NFC support and having GPS.

Competitors:

Direct competitors of Redmi 9  include Doogee S88 plus, Lenovo K12 and Vivo iQOO U3. Doogee S88 plus has higher RAM of 8GB than Redmi 9 but later has lighter weight than former. Another comparison of both is of battery life. Doogee S88 plus has a bigger battery capacity of 10000 mAh than Xiaomi Redmi 9.

Again Redmi 9 us 1.0% Lower in weight than Lenovo K12 and other features are approximately same. If we talk about Vivo iQOO U3 then it features 100% more RAM than Redmi 9 but is 7.0% heavier in weight than Xiaomi Redmi 9. Other competitors are LG W11, Vivo Y3s and POCO X3.

Verdict:

The Xiaomi Redmi 9 is a budget device with such features that no other device is offering at this time with the same package. The best thing about the smartphone is it’s having a beautiful and grippy plastic body, sharp LCD screen with high contrast,  and remarkable battery life.  Moreover its latest Android with good photo and video quality, wireless FM radio, 3.5 mm jack, microSD and IR blaster.

The smartphone has low low screen brightness and is hardly useable in bright light. There is mediocre gaming performance but gaming is possible if you are okay with sacrificing the graphics quality. Redmi 9 has no basic water protection. The Redmi 9 is not that snappy but it’s not bad. You will have to sacrifice screen resolution, camera quality and likely also battery life.
